We are a full-service supplier of fertilizer, pest management products, including biologicals and bees, seeds and other consumable goods to the greenhouse, nursery and specialty horticulture industries in Canada and the USA.
We are growing and looking to add an Assistant Controller to our team. The intent would be that this individual grow into a second Controller role.
This position is based in our Leamington office.
What you'll do
- Assist with month-end and year-end processes, including the period-end roll-forward of our ERP system
- Assist with the maintenance of local account mappings and all monthly group-level reporting
- Perform balance sheet reconciliations and ensure the general ledger, subledgers and other financial records are accurately maintained
- Perform monthly reconciliation of intercompany purchases, sales, and closing balances
- Provide support in the preparation of journal entries, adjusting entries, accruals, and reversals as necessary
- Proactive analysis of monthly financial statements for the business including analysis of any established KPIs
- Oversee the tracking of supplier rebate programs and prepare the journals to accrue performance to date
- Assist the Controller in timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial and management reports
- Work with the Controller in the development of annual budgets and ongoing forecasts
- Support upper management by helping to develop and maintain short and long-term cash flow forecasts
- Gain understanding of local production and monitor production costing
- Assist with other government, regulatory and ESG reporting as required
- Support the design and creation of ad-hoc reports and KPIs
- Process inventory and costing adjustments
- Complete periodic sales tax returns, and assist in the maintenance of our US sales tax system
- Provide support to the Controller and / or CFO with reporting and other duties as assigned
- Support other departments as required
- Maintain absolute confidentiality with respect to all business-related information, including from co-workers, where appropriate
- Provide assistance with the annual financial audit
- Ensure compliance with internal control policies, guidelines, and procedures, and recommend changes where appropriate
- Participate in the annual inventory count
- Act as backup to the Controller in all areas and functions
What you've done
- 3 - 5 years’ experience in a similar role
- Post-secondary degree in business (accounting)
- CPA designation would be considered an asset.
- Excellent written and oral English language communication skills
- The ability to multi-task, prioritize, organize, and manage workload
- Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Excel
- Willingness to perform cross-functional tasks as needed in order to achieve
- departmental goals
- Willingness to periodically travel to off-site locations as necessary
