Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Accountant to join our team. Working closely with the Financial Controller you will use your experience and technical expertise to support our financial department.
Requirements
· A Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or related discipline.
· 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
· Experience working in finance in a similar role (industrial would be an asset).
· Proficient in financial accounting software, excel and general computer skills.
· Must have strong organizational skills and pay great attention to detail.
· A professional accounting designation such as a CA, CPA is considered an asset.
· An understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards would be an asset.
· High level of integrity, confidentially and accountably.
Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Management
· Participate in implementing sound financial operations, systems, and procedures aligned with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
· Perform monthly reconciliations of bank accounts, credit card statements and manage other bank reconciliation duties.
· Review transactions to ensure they are coded to the correct department, funding source, and project.
· Ensure that payroll is processed, payables are paid, and receivables are collected in a timely manner.
· Assist in the budgeting process, monitoring actuals against budgets and reporting issues to the Financial Controller.
· Assist and work closely with the Financial Controller in the preparation of timely and reliable monthly and quarterly financial reports for use by Management.
· Ensure financial reporting and procedural compliance with all applicable federal and provincial regulations as well as with the terms and conditions of funding sources.
· Maintain, evaluate, and recommend improvements to the accounting systems to improve internal controls, efficiencies, and decision-making.
· Documentation, understanding, and communication of all tax related payments and filings.
· Assist in the preparation of financial data for tax return preparation.
· Provide input into plans, policies, and protocols to meet the finance department’s mandate including sound documentation, record keeping and preparation of reports.
Operations:
· Assist with the directing and coordinating of all accounting operational functions within the finance department including payroll, inventory, accounts receivable and accounts payable.
· Oversee the full cycle accounts payable, including invoice processing, vendor payments, reconciliation of AP and prepayment ledgers.
· Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions.
· Respond to finance-related inquiries and requests for information by both internal and external stakeholders.
· Ensure that the accounting system and records are properly maintained in accordance with Accounting Standards.
· Monitor the purchase order (PO) process.
· Support the design and development of accounting records and files of new legal entities and/or departments.
· Support year-end financial procedures and coordinate the provision of information to external auditors.
· As required on financial matters, liaise with other government agencies and departments, private industry business, and any other individuals, groups, or agencies.
People Management:
· Provide direction, coaching, and supervision to finance staff using constructive and positive feedback to build skills and improve work performance.
· Conduct finance staff performance evaluations per established processes.
· In collaboration with human resources, ensure personnel records are maintained for all department staff.
The schedule for this position is 5/2. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
