CONTROLLER/OFFICE MANAGER
About the Job
LiUNA Local 1059 — The Labourers' International Union of North America’s fastest growing Canadian Local — is hiring at its head office in London, ON.
The successful candidate will perform a wide variety of accounting and human resources tasks while working closely with our Business Manager on overall operations and future growth.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, direct and coordinate all accounting and HR operational functions.
- Prepare monthly financial statements for review and approval by the Business Manager.
- Prepare year-end financial statements, assist with year-end audit and prepare working papers for external auditors.
- Manage and monitor all accounts, ledgers and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
- Perform monthly bank reconciliations.
- Prepare government filings and remittances/annual reconciliations of EHT and WSIB.
- In conjunction with the Training Centre Coordinator, compile on a monthly basis various Federal and Provincial grant expenditures to ensure grants are maximized and expenditures conform to grant requirements.
- Develop and implement consistent accounting policies, practices and procedures across all programs.
- Advise management on payroll-related issues such as employee benefits, severance, T4s, T4As, vacation, etc.
- Evaluate accounting and internal control systems in order to develop, implement and maintain a system of controls.
- Assess current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement and implementing new processes.
- Provide leadership and support to accounts receivable and accounts payable staff.
- Hire, train, and retain skilled office staff.
- Provide financial analysis as needed.
- Prepare annual operating budgets.
- Monitor the financial performance of the Local.
- In conjunction with the Business Manager, manage HR functions (payroll is outsourced) including policy and procedure compliance, ongoing maintenance of HR practices, establishing policies, Employment standards, benefit program, employee policies and handbook, etc.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting required.
- CPA designation required.
- 10+ years experience in finance, accounting, or as a controller required.
- Experience in a union/construction environment is an asset.
- Well established organizational and leadership skills.
- Highly proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Proven time management skills and the ability to independently manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Compensation Package
- Annual salary range depending on experience and education: $125,000 - $150,000.
