Located in Calgary, the individual in the Senior Accountant role will report to the Supervisor, Heartland Accounting. The Senior Accountant will oversee the cost accounting function for the Heartland Petrochemical Business Unit. The individual will mentor and lead cost accountants and manage the area of product costing which includes polypropylene & feedstock inventory valued over $100 million and located across North America and analyze the manufacturing performance results. This role also supports business initiatives such as the development of new products, manufacturing annual budgeting efforts and is responsible for feedstock intercompany transactions.
Key Activities and Responsibilities:
- Oversee the cost accounting function with overall accountability for the variance analysis of cost of sales and inventories (monthly, quarterly and yearly analysis)
- Mentor the cost accountants and ensure cost of sales and inventory financial information is accurate & complete and all month end processes are completed under established financial reporting deadlines
- Review and approve general ledger (G/L) journal entries and provide accurate accounting of cost of sales and accruals
- Review G/L account reconciliations including recommendations to address reconciling items
- Lead the development of standard costs in SAP ERP system
- Lead and develop SAP configuration changes with IT for inventory and cost of sales process
- Responsible for the analysis of product costs and variances associated with purchased and manufactured goods
- Lead the inventory and cost of sales annual budgeting and standard costing updates
- Develop product cost estimates for new product developments for the Marketing teams and proactively provide guidance on risks and opportunities to enhance product margins
- Presentation of monthly manufacturing performance results to HPC leadership team
- Review and test the adequacy of the standard costing system
- Perform and report on results of periodic audits of Inventories (Work in Process, Finished Goods/Raw Materials)
- Develop more efficient and accurate manufacturing reporting
- Responsible for the accurate accounting of feedstock intercompany transactions and work closely with other business units to ensure elimination of entries
Education, Skills and Experience:
- CPA Designation required with six to eight years of applicable industry experience
- Knowledge and experience in accounting under IFRS
- SAP experience preferred
- Experience in dealing with complex contracts
- Ability to set and meet challenging deadlines and work independently in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and accuracy
- Effective team player that can manage internal and external relationships with interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral)
- Strong analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities
Hours:
Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week
