Chief Financial Officer for an Indigenous-owned Economic Development Corporation
A small Indigenous-owned economic development corporation on the Northwest Coast is searching for a Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The CFO has a vital role in working alongside and supporting the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Plus, managing the finances, providing financial expertise, assisting in driving growth initiatives, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
The primary duties of a Chief Financial Officer include:
Financial Reporting and Analysis
· Preparing accurate and timely financial statements, reports, and records for shareholders and regulatory bodies to assess the company's financial health.
· Analyzing financial data, market trends, and competitor activities to forecast future performance and advise on strategic financial planning.
· Analyzing existing businesses’ financial performance and analyzing new business opportunities.
Budgeting and Financial Planning
· Develop annual operating, capital, and program budgets for the company.
· Performing risk management by analyzing liabilities, investments, and capital structure.
· Identifying opportunities for cost reduction, process improvements, and revenue growth.
· Cash Flow Management
· Overseeing day-to-day accounting, cash management, investments, and internal controls.
· Ensuring cash flow is compatible with operations and monitoring business performance.
Strategic Advisory
· Advising the CEO and board on financial strategy, business opportunities and funding opportunities.
· Evaluating and recommending major business decisions like growth strategies, cost-saving measures, and new products/services.
Team Management
· Building and leading the finance and accounting team, including hiring and overseeing personnel.
· Implementing financial systems, processes, and best practices for fiscal management and cross-team collaboration.
Education
· A bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration or a related field is generally required.
· Many employers prefer candidates with an MBA or other advanced degree, especially for CFO roles in larger small businesses.
· Professional certifications like a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) are highly valued and can enhance qualifications.
Experience
· Experience working with indigenous organizations and businesses is essential.
· Demonstrated experience in analyzing business opportunities and preparing comprehensive reports on the opportunity is essential.
· This role will require a close working relationship with the CEO and together driving growth for the economic development corporation.
· Experience in resource industries, construction, oil and gas, and coastal businesses is beneficial.

· Knowledge of relevant regulations, compliance, and tax laws
· Being a designated CPA or having an MBA is a requirement.
Working Environment
· This work may be remote and done independently. The CEO is based in Vancouver and meeting in person is a benefit.
· Some travel will be required to the Northwest Coast of BC.
